Midi cable

Post by Bart »

Is there a maximum length for te midi cable to connect your device, for me it's the Nord Stage 4?

The MIDI outputs on the Nome are standard outputs: they follow the specification.
So there is the standard max length of any MIDI Cable, which I believe is 15 meters.

If you can use a shorter one it's better, less chance of issues. But 15 meters should still work fine ;)

Thanks for your reply. I am indeed using a DIN MIDI cable; it’s 5 meters long, but we’re experiencing a delay that causes the arpeggio to fall just off the beat. Also, it seems like we have to follow the first beat of the bar on the click track to catch the 'one' on the Nord Stage 4. Is this a setting on one of the devices, or are we overlooking something else?

On most machines the arp will start when you hit the keys, the play button on the Nome (which sends MIDI Start) will have no effect unfortunately.
Sequencers usually react to MIDI Start, while arppegiators ignore it and use the key presses as start point.

Check if your Nord Stage can start its sequence/arp with a MIDI Start message. If so pressing play on the Nome will start it correctly on time, on the 1.
(note also the configuration of the Play Button on the Nome, as you can either "wait" for the next downbeat, or send MIDI Start right away and reset the Metronome/internal timing - check the "rES" setting on the manual).

The MIDI Cable and the length I am pretty sure has zero impact on the timing.

Probably true for Nord when used on its own, however not true in general if the machine is receiving external clock rather than using its own. In those cases, the ARP might wait for the next beat and start only then, even though you've been already holding the keys for hundreds of milliseconds already. This might be the case here as well. If the machine has sequencer as well, it's almost certainly working this way - i.e. Sequential Pro 3 in my studio.
