Any questions about the Midronome (Nome I) or Nome II

Analog Rytm MK2, and my modular setup ain't lining up with Ableton.

Post by kszucsszabo »

Hello friends,

After many headaches with sync up issues, I came to the decision to give a try with Nome II.

I'm using the latest version of Ableton 12 with M2 mac, and the latest firmware for U-sync. I've set up reduced latency while monitoring as said on manuals, and on the Tempo n Midi tab I've selected Nome with input dar control and for the output the commands. 1 midi output from Nome goes to my Analog rytm mk2, I've set it up to receive clock from midi, If I record that back to Ableton, usually theres like 5-7ms delay, seems to be different all the times. The other midi output I'm syncing Arturia beatstep pro, and from there Im using gates and duplicating the clock signal to send it out to my modular setup, If I'm recording the modular to Ableton theres like a 15ms delay in there, I've tried to sync one of my modular sequencer directly from Nome's analog output to see if theres a problem with the BSP connection, but neither of them runs on its own by that output. I've also connected the audio output from Nome to my interface to see if that metronome is on point or not, but Ableton havent receive any signal that way.

Any ideas what could the problem be, or what could skipped my attention while setting it up?

Thanks in advance and cheers!

Hi, and welcome :)

Glad you decided to give the Nome a go!

You have many questions, trying to answer them in order:
1. For U-SYNC make sure to follow the "U-SYNC Quick Start" PDF step by step. Follow every relevant section carefully to avoid any mishaps in the setup. "Reduced Latency while monitoring" is not needed, for example (but Delay Compensation is). Make sure Ableton is not sending any kind of clock (U-SYNC takes care of that), make sure your Rytm is synced to the Nome and that it is started by the Nome as well.
2. Latency is normal, as it comes from many parts of the setup. But it should not move, so that you can set the "SHIFT" slider in the U-SYNC plugin to compensate for it. The coming U-SYNC version (not released yet) will have an automatic latency detection switch to make it easier, for now you'll need to measure the latency like you did.
3. If you can, definitely sync your modular using the ANLG output of the Nome and not through the BSP. The output sends 5V pulses of 5ms, you can configure it using the "AnL", "An.1" and "An.2" settings on the Nome - see the Nome II Manual for more info
4. the "AUDIO" output of the Nome is a metronome, you can mute/unmute it in a few different ways (see the Nome manual as well), by default it should be constantly unmuted. Check the little switch in the back (headphones/balanced line) and set it correctly.
