Use Nome2 to 'forward'/send MIDI commands to Roland TD-27

Post by akka »

Hi all

I use Nome2 with my band in a rehearsal and live.
Last week I hooked up a double stompbox guitar pedal up to the Nome2, to start/stop playback and to advance and reverse through the presets. Works great as well. I use this pedal: https://www.session.de/products/kong-fs-2-fussschalter/

I'll soon be doing my time first gigging with e-drums, on my TD-27.

Now, what I'd love the Nome2 to be able to do live, is forward the "next tempo preset" or "previous tempo preset" command through MIDI, on the Nome's MIDI port 1 or 2, to my TD-27. Not on both ports, because one of them sends out MIDI clock to the keyboard player, and I don't want to send other commands that way.
When I prepare a setlist of songs in my TD-27, with corresponding kits, samples and settings, and I make sure that this setlist corresponds with the Nome2's presets list, it would be a great way of always having the right tempo/MIDI clock AND TD-27 kit ans sounds, with only 1 stompbox hit.
So far, I have not gotten this to work. :)

Does Nome2 automatically 'forward' the "next/previous preset" command through MIDI ports 1 or 2? Us yes, what command does it send? If no, is there a way to configure it so I does forward/send out this command?

I realise that, even if this would work, the TD27 would have to be able to receive that particular MIDI command and act accordingly. I have not found if it can actually do that. I can through a foot controller, but is not what I want, I want it done through MIDI.

I'm curious if anyone can shed some light on this. Much appreciated!

Simon, could you maybe take a look at my post and let me know if what I'm asking is even remotely possible? If not, I'll get it out of my head to try and use the Nome as a MIDI command forwarder :) Thanks!

Hi akka, sorry I must have missed this.

I'm afraid this is not possible with the Nome, and too specific to be implemented one day.

I would suggest to turn things around: get of your other devices to send a MIDI Command when you press a button, which will get all other devices to change their preset/settings to match the new song.
The Nome can receive MIDI Commands and change the loaded preset accordingly (you could also set the tempo and the time signature via MIDI Commands, which would be the same as applying a preset really), and there are quite a few options - see screenshot of the manual:
midi-commands-presets.png
The messages could also be sent via an app on your phone - BandHelper can do that for example. Then you use MIDI over bluetooth from the phone, and use a WIDI receiver to convert the bluetooth to a physical cable.

Note that the Nome has no MIDI input so you need to send those commands through the USB port. You have quite a few devices that can convert DIN-MIDI to USB host, for ex the Behringer Go Midi Host or the Kenton MIDI Host.

Many possibilities overall, you just have to find what works for you ;)

Hey Simon,
Thanks for your reply. I already suspected I was overreaching here :)
Thanks, I will look into different options.

All the best,
Akka
