Midi delay on all tracks

Post by guitoooo »

Hi Simon, Hi everyone,

My nome is slaved to Ableton live 12 on mac
I have -12,9ms compensation

The thing is that all my midi tracks are "off the grid" regarding the audio compensation.
I tried to compensate in ableton midi setting and on track delay but it doesn't change anything.

What I want it to have my audio on time and the midi datas on the grid so that I can share my projects with other people.

Is that doable?

Thanks you!

Bonjour Guillaume

I'm not sure I fully understand. If everything is off the grid, how did you come up with the -12.9ms?

Hi Simon,

I don't understand either.

My audio is perfect on sync.

When I record midi :
- the notes are late when the "keep latency" button is ON
- the notes are early when the "keep latency" button is OFF

When I go to Ableton Midi setting, when I enter some latency setting compensation it won't have an effect ; I can't adjust the midi latency.

Please find the link showing this behaviour : https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

Best,

Bonjour Guillaume

Ahh I see.

What you’re seeing is normal, audio and MIDI go through different channels in Ableton, so they end up with different latency. The U-SYNC shift slider can help you get MIDI notes right on the grid, but if you adjust it, your audio recording will move off the grid instead.
Unfortunately, it’s not possible to have both audio and MIDI perfectly on the grid at the same time with the current version of U-SYNC. You’ll need to choose whether you want your audio or your MIDI to be on the grid for sharing projects.

Hi Simon,

Thanks for your response and reactivity!

That would be an amazing update for U-SYNC ;)

Have a great day

Hi Simon,

Me again ;)

What I don't understand is when I record the midi notes I have that "offset" regarding the U-SYNC compensation BUT when I play back the midi track back to the instrument I have the latency corresponding to that "offset".

Meaning if I quantise the Midi track to the grid my instrument is perfectly synced with ableton

What I thought is that everything would be offset and in time with ableton tempo.
I don't really understand

My head is spinning lol

Bonjour Guillaume

Generally, until U-SYNC 2.0, using the Nome to record and/or playback MIDI Notes is outside its usage so you're on your own to make it work. Using it to send clock to a hardware sequencer and recording that sequencer's audio output should work like a charm.

Regarding your issue with the MIDI Notes, my guess is this is an Ableton thing. I cannot be sure before I have fully investigated this, which I will do together with the U-SYNC 2.0 release. U-SYNC uses PDC to be able to go "back in time" (PDC basically delays the DAW, so that other things can be on time, in this case your machines' timing). I think PDC becomes "not active" when monitoring or when doing playback, hence the delay you are getting when you are playing.

Just a guess :D But if you want to try to tackle this you can play around with PDC on/off, "Reduced Latency when Monitoring" on/off, Monitoring on/off, the "Keep Latency" on/off (show it by going to "View" -> "Track Options"),trying to adding an "External Instrument" effect and adjusting the delay there. You can try different settings, different combinations, I'm sure there will be one that works.

Ironically, that what I'll do when the U-SYNC 2.0 release is ready... go through each DAW's settings to make sure I know how people should set up their DAW to make it work. That's 95% of the support requests on U-SYNC

Hey Simon,

Thanks so much for your insights, I'll try different settings and combinations and see how it goes.

So looking forward U-SYNC 2!!!

Have a good evening
