Hi,
I think i've configured the Nome II correctly to run tight with my hybrid studio set up but as you can see there's obvious latency (behind the beat) when i bring Ableton into the equation. I'm unsure where to make the latency adjustment. Is it in Nome settings or Ableton?
And one further question - Should i somehow connect the analog out from Nome for the modular synths to run as tight as possible?
Thanks.
My workflow;
Nome midi 1 OUT 1 to Oxi One midi IN (TRS)
Midi Devices - Erica Midi Thru Box IN to Oxi midi OUT (TRS)
Oxi ONE Clk OUT - Pam's New Workout Clk + Run (modular devices)
USYNC turned on and running in Ableton
Nome II/ U-SYNC /Ableton 12 latency
Re: Nome II/ U-SYNC /Ableton 12 latency
Hi
Please check your Ableton settings, in particular the PDC and related settings.
See this post as well: viewtopic.php?p=2428#p2428
To check the actual latency of Ableton, please record the Metronome output of the Nome, see if this is on the grid. If it is, it means the latency is happening further down the chain.
And yes I would avoid using the OXI as a clk source, just send the clock from the ANLG from the Nome straight into your Pam, the shorter the clock chain the better

Re: Nome II/ U-SYNC /Ableton 12 latency
Thanks Simon I'll do those checks and let you know how it all goes.
Regarding sending the clock from ANGL straight to Pam's, I presume that won't give me STOP/START. Would a split stereo 3.5mm cable going to Pam's Clk + Run do the job?
Thanks

Re: Nome II/ U-SYNC /Ableton 12 latency
I've done some preliminary tests with the metronome click from Nome going straight to Ableton and it is not on the grid (see filename - nome metro test)
The audio files below i've adjusted the DEC by various amounts in Ableton. I thought it best to show you these before i go further down the rabbit hole of millisecond madness!
All tests were done with Delay Compensation and Reduced Latency when Monitoring ticked in Ableton at 48Hz and Buffer Size set to 256 samples.
When you said 'If it is, it means the latency is happening further down the chain', what does it mean if it's not? (as you can see in screenshot it isn't!) So i'm not sure what the baseline is now!
I can continue testing this in the morning. Thanks.

Re: Nome II/ U-SYNC /Ableton 12 latency
I meant that if the Nome's metronome is recorded on the grid, but that your drums/sequences are not, then it means the sync DAW <-> Nome is ok, so any clock coming out of the Nome will be perfectly on time with the DAW.
So if your sequencers/drum machines still have latency, it means there is an extra delay/latency happening between Nome clocks <-> sequencers. In your case it could be the OXI receiving the clock, syncing to it, recreating a new clock which is then sent to Pam's, who might itself change/recreate the clock again.
Now I assume your last screenshot is a recording of the Nome's metronome? That looks correct to me, +/- 1ms latency is expected, depending on your settings and your audio interface.

Re: Nome II/ U-SYNC /Ableton 12 latency
Yeah the last screenshot is all Nome metronome clock at varying degrees off DEC offset offset within Ableton. So, the top wave is ok/acceptable? Cool. I'll see what I can do with the Oxi One now as far as what it's doing with sending clocks. (The Oxi One arrived less than a week before Nome II so this is all a very new workflow for me to get my head around)
There's more of an an obvious to the ear latency with the Pulsar 23 sequenced parts which are triggered via midi. This appears to be exacerbated when Ableton is brought into the equation.
I generally work in two scenarios; writing and creating parts/music with the sequencer, and then when I'm ready to record audio i bring the DAW into play.
In scenario one I've been starting the Oxi One from Nome.
The Clk Out on the Oxi that goes to Pam's Clk + Run sound pretty tight so it would suggest the latency problem happens somewhere between midi in + midi out (TRS) on the Oxi. To add weight to these observations, I send clocks from Pam's to Moog DFAM, Labirynth and Subharmonicon that all lock nicely.
Which again leads me to believe the latency, as you also suggested, lies with the midi in + out on the Oxi One sequencer.
I'll look into that today.
So with regards to my query regarding taking an analogue output from Nome directly to Pam's via a stereo left+ right splitter, do you think this would help overall in making the modular synths even tighter and at the same time perhaps take the pressure off the midi latency by not using the Oxi One Clk Out for that purpose?
In my head that sounds like a bit of a daft question but I'm trying to find the best solution for syncing all my equipment and for getting the most out of Nome as the Master clock at all times.
And thank you Simon for all your help and advice. I'm aware every user's systems vary greatly and appreciate any guidance whatsoever to achieve these outcomes.

Re: Nome II/ U-SYNC /Ableton 12 latency
Yes, the more you can send clocks directly from the Nome to whatever equipment you have, the better.juradub wrote: ↑06 Jan 2025, 10:48 So with regards to my query regarding taking an analogue output from Nome directly to Pam's via a stereo left+ right splitter, do you think this would help overall in making the modular synths even tighter and at the same time perhaps take the pressure off the midi latency by not using the Oxi One Clk Out for that purpose?
Maybe the OXI clock is fine, but trust me the Nome clock is tighter, even if you cannot hear the difference (highly possible) it would be ridiculous not to use it, you have it, it won't cost more to make the most out of it
Re: Nome II/ U-SYNC /Ableton 12 latency
Yes that's my thinking! You've came up with an amazing idea and made it happen. Musicians/producers have been waiting years for something like this and I fully intend to build everything that needs clocked around it!
All the best!
