Latency in Logic pro not always compensated

Well, actually this not completely true but there is only so much space for a title.

I made some“scientific“ tests. Nome connected directly to Macbook M1. From Nome i feed drummachines etc via both midi out and analog clock out. Latest FW and latest U-sync. Buffer is the same in logic and u-sync and all the rest ist set up like in the manual.

A classic problem when recording multiple tracks into a daw: you have a perfect sync (i.e the rcordings are exactly on the grid) but when increasing plugin count, the latency goes up (especially with plugins who needs to“look ahead“). Usually it“should“ be compensated within the daw and is working
good with U-sync up to a certain point. I recorded a bunch of tracks (short one bar loops) and put an uad api 2500 on each track, then recorded the next one and so on. The first 8 Tracks was fine and the new recordings were still on the grid. With track 9-10 (always one mono and one stereo track) the new recording was slightly off the grid. slightly but there. Things got worse when i tried a few (1-3) plugins in the master channel.

Another thing is: sync is not tight, it‘s a little behind the grid. That‘s what the latency slider is for (in U-sync) i guess but i did not try yet. I don‘t see this as a problem yet, just want to mention it.

But the unpredictable behavior of recording like you need to check every rcording by „hand“ or „eye“ (zoomed in)…i was hoping nome would eliminate the need of it. It drove me mad in the past.

Is there anything that can be done to improve this? What exactly is causing this? Most of the increasing latency is automaticaly compensated but why not everything? Plugins that report their latency not precise enought to the host? I‘m afraid of the answer cause i think it‘s adaw problem if nome can‘t“fix“ this than probably nothing can.

On the picture you can see that actually all of the tracks differ slightly but the worst one is the first. That‘s the recording after i enabled a logic limiter and uad api channelstrip in the master channel. The zoom level is high but there is no doubt they will all go out of sync sooner or later, i usually record long (6-10 minutes) takes,

Hi :)

Thanks for the long post and analysis.

Could you take a look at the brand new "U-SYNC Quick start guide" on https://simntonic.com/pages/support ?
It might clear out some of the points you mention.

Yes plugins should be automatically compensated by Logic, in theory at least. If not please tell us precisely which plugin (ideally one we can get to test it with) made the recordings move.

Two other things:
  1. Each recording will always have a slightly different latency, this is inevitable, even with U-SYNC. But the goal of U-SYNC and the Nome is for you to focus on your music, not where the recordings are :) My suggestion is to adjust the shift slider so they are just after the bar (to prevent clipping when copy/pasting them), but not so far that it creates phasing or hearable issues
  2. Did you see any drift? There should be zero drift, even after 10 hours of recording. If you get any (because a machine skipped a clock pulse - this is extremely rare but I believe could happen over a 10h session), just hold down the play button on the Nome to resync the connected machines.
