Ableton Sync Issues

Hi,

I am using Ableton 12.2.5 and have updated the Nome II and USYNC to the latest versions.

I have setup the Nome II as detailed in the user guide.

I have MIDI OUT 1 on the Nome II going to the MOTU MIDI Express XT and then out to an RD-8, Digitakt 2 and Digitone.

When I press play in Ableton, the RD-8, Digitakt 2 and Digitone all start and sync fine, but they are way off the grid/Ableton metronome.

The only way I can find to correct this is to change the Device Error Compensation in the Ableton settings to 27ms, but this then adds a serious amount of overall latency to my system.

Am I missing something?

Regards

Just as a follow up. I have tried going direct from the Nome to the Digitakt 2, same issue. I also tried using a single sound card instead of an aggregate, same issue. I use SoundSource so I restarted without launching SoundSource or ARK, unfortunately same issue.

I am out of ideas at the moment.

Hi :)

Thanks for asking here! It sounds like you missed the "shift" slider in the U-SYNC plugin?
Please check the U-SYNC manual to make sure your Ableton settings are correct (you will need Delay Compensation turned on and no monitoring through Ableton on the tracks you are recording).

Rest sounds all fine. Are your note sequences directly in the hardware machines or are they written in Ableton?
You can use the Nome to "forward" MIDI Notes to your hardware but they go through USB-MIDI and not through U-SYNC, so their timing is unchanged, it's the same you would get from any other USB-MIDI interface (maybe a tiny bit better).

We plan on improving this in U-SYNC 2.0 :)

Hi. Thanks for getting back to me. Delay compensation is on and I have tried moving the shifter all the way to -100ms but still facing the issue.

All sequences are from the instrument internal sequences.

So -100ms and no difference? That sounds like monitoring is on :)

Have you checked all the settings and recommendations written in the U-SYNC manual? For example "Reduced latency when monitoring"
And are you sure your machines are actually synced to the Nome (i.e. do they follow when you press play/change tempo on the Nome)?

Basically moving the slider will "move" the clock which should move the timing of your hardware compared to the DAW, which should move the recordings. It's pretty simple.

If nothing happens when you move the slider it usually means something is off with Ableton's settings.

Another thought: in your last screenshot it looks like you're recording from "2-RD-8" - is that a normal audio interface input?
If you cannot get it to work, please try with an empty Ableton session, then build it from there to see what was the thing that prevented it from working.

Hi. Yes the transport from Ableton is starting the Nome and all instruments.

All settings are configured as shown in the U-SYNC guide.

The RD-8 track is an External Instrument for the Behringer RD-8. I have them set up for all my external gear. I just tried a fresh session with just a U-SYNC and the input from the Digitakt 2 direct into an audio track. If I reduce the slider to -10ms it is nearly on grid.

I guess it doesn't like the External Instrument.

One question though. How am I meant to hear what is being recorded if I have to have monitoring turned off?

I got something workable with the following...

Basically using External Instruments in Ableton and monitoring through those, and then recording into audio tracks with monitoring off.

You can have monitoring on if you have the "Keep Latency" option off (see the U-SYNC manual) :)
