Needs to be a one handed operation I think - ring finger press and turn with thumb and forefinger is possible.
Push and twist just the knob - maybe, depending on resistance, as Simon suggests.

The drummer can set the tempo manually at the start of each song...leave it running and open the tune on hi hat or let the guitarist start or whatever.
